Wichita PD initiated this program 5 years or so ago. It’s a great — completely voluntary — idea. DOJ should lead the way by having its law enforcement components do the same, as a number of firearms are lost by or stolen from its employees. The DOJ OIG conducted an investigation into such subject 7 or so years ago and perhaps in the future this could be an OIG recommendation in future reports. It makes sense.
This is a simple but brilliant concept that uses NIBIN in a creative way. My hat’s off to Louisville Metro PD for doing this and to Wichita PD who originally came up with the program. We should think of a way to spread this to other regions.
